Running XP Home on a P4 with 1GB Ram & 120GB Disk.
I have found several files that I have deleted, (and
indeed the contents are gone, but the folder icon and
filename are still there. If I try to delete the folder,
I get an error message that the system cannot find the
file to delete. Similar error message trying to rename
the file and/or add content to it.

A search of the registry shown no presence of the
filename.

Is there someplace these filenames might be kept (e.g. in
a lookahead index) that might not always be cleared??
It's not too bad now, but it could accumulate into quite
a mess if it continues.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.
This one has me stumped.

If they are AVI files try this

Goto Start>>Run>>Type "regedit" goto
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-
4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32] - Delete this key

This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in
response to file property queries on these files.
