XP-pro sp2 -- shutting down frequently -- sometimes with the message
"DCOM server shut down unexpectedly -- system will shut down in 60
seconds. Also frequently see a registry corruption error -- which
states that recovery was successful.

When it does come up -- explorer works but cannot copy files to another
disk. Do not get an error message but files do not copy.

Suggestions? Thanks.

Is the shutting down random? If so, that points to failing hardware.
Here are some general hardware troubleshooting steps:

This dcom error is also indicative of several virus/worms. These
viruses crash the system like this to force a reboot.

Are your fully patched post sp2? What av and is it fully updated?

Have you run a checkdisk from pre boot screen? Could very well be a
failing hard disk.

Norton 2005. Fully patched post sp2. Tried a repair install, but did
not help -- tho now have a limited ability to copy and move files. May
indeed be HD -- but cannot get HDtune to load -- basically most programs
will not load now. Only thing I can think of at present is reformat C
and reload OS?

There is no point in installing Windows on faulty hardware. Take the
time to make sure your hardware is good first. You don't want to test a
hard drive from within Windows. Do as I previously suggested and
download a diagnostic utility from the hard drive mftr.'s website. See
the link I gave you for details - and here it is again for your
convenience:

Before saw your message, tried again to load windows had got blue screen
with the IRQ not less or equal message. I have seen this before
with a memory failure. Loaded XP on an old drive (4G -- so way too
small) and put the western digital 40G drive in as a slave. Figured if
drive OK could then transfer the OS to the first partition on the 40G
drive. Tested with HDtune and did not see any error messages -- so
perhaps is a memory failure -- tho am not that certain what I should be
looking for with HDtune. What is a good test for the mem failure? Thanks.

Thanks -- saw the memtest after I had emailed-- one of the mem sticks is
giving errors -- other is not, so that seems to be the problem.
