I have purchased a new copy of Windows XP Professional. I am trying to upgrade from Windows 2000 Professional. I have checked the suitablity issues, which are fine.
I have run the Files & Transfer application from the CD. I have attached a 40 Gg hard drive in an external drive enclosure, which becomes my "F" drive. I have a 17 Gg hard drive on the desktop.
I have two problems that I would really appreciate some help on:
1) When I run the F & T app with the "files and settings" setting it attempts to copy everything including what's on the "F" drive. I have a lot of other stuff on there and the copy process will run out of space if I let it - uselessly - copy itself in full. How do I use an external drive, as the app lets me do, without it backing up that drive?
2) The machine was connected to a corporate network and has several users, all of which I ignore except myself. I would like it to become a single user machine, albeit connected to a Linksys hub to share a cable internet connection. If I transfer settings am I going to replicate the old network settings on XP and should I just transfer files only? Does that mean that I have to reload all the apps, Office etc?
Any help would be very much appreciated before I take the plunge.
