Ok, I really have no idea on it. I know may be many people have asked
this issue here, but, I cannot find out a solution till now.

This is only a small simple network. 10 PC, 3 of them are XP pro and
others are XP home. They are connected through a hub, have the same
workgroup, sharing files and access Internet together through one PC
by the help of Internet sharing function provided by XP.

One PC contains files are common files for all users. It is a XP PRO
machine with NTFS. At first, we use simple file sharing function,
every PC can access the shared files without problem.

Now, we want to have more security on the sharing files. We disable
the simple file sharing function. But, at the same time, all other PC
cannot access the shared files of that machine immediately, only
access denied is prompted out.

We have not changed any permission setting. The permission level is
still stated at everyone.

I have no idea on how to solve the problem. Please help and many
thanks.

Dee,

Here is the definitive Microsoft article on file sharing.

Is the Guest account enabled on the "server"?

With workgroup authentication / authorisation, file sharing (in the simplest
case, for files accessible to "Everyone") works under one of two conditions:
1) The computer accessing the shared files is logged in with an account /
password that is identically setup on the computer providing the shared files.
2) The computer providing the shared files has the Guest account enabled (for
XP Pro, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run - "lusrmgr.msc")).

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Thank you very much. I success to access the shared folder.

I want to ask one more question. When I assign the permission for the
shard folder, is it possible I appoint a user only from a specific PC
can access it.

For example, PC-A is the "server" PC, while PC-B and PC-C are "client"
PC. Both PC-A, PC-B and PC-C has a user "Lily", so that "Lily" login
from PC-B and PC-C can access PC-A's shared file provided that
permission in PC-A is set to allow "Lily" to access it through
network.

But, is it possible to only allow PC-B's "Lily" to access shared file,
but does not allow PC-C's "Lily" to access it? When I set permission,
I find that there is an option "location", but I only can choose PC-A
(the sharing machine) in that option.

Please help. Again thank you very much.
