On "old" computer I ran files and setting wizard. I have made sure
that all available updates for WinXP on the "old" Gateway S510 desktop
have been installed, as well as all available WinXP updates for my
"new" IBM a21m Thinkpad.

I run the files and settings transfer wizard, saving to a USB external
hard drive connected to the old computer. I then plugged that drive
into a USB port on the new computer and tried to run the files and
setting wizard on it. I get the following error message from Files
and Setting Transfer Wizard:

"The location that you specified does not contain stored information.
Please type a valid folder path into the edit box. If you entered a
path to the folder on a removable disk, the disk must be in the
drive."

1. After you have installed XP and your programs, open the
Files & Settings Transfer Wizard and select "New Computer".
2. Select "I don't need the Wizard Disk......"
3. Browse to your hard drive and locate the "USMT2.UNC" file.
4. Your Files and Settings will begin installing on the new drive.

Note:

The .DAT file within the USMT2.UNC folder should be named IMG00001.DAT
There should also be a file named "status". If you have these two files within
the USMT2.UNC folder, you should only browse to the "USMT2.UNC" folder
when using the wizard.

==> Make sure your IMG00001 file is properly named: IMG00001.DAT

You need to browse to the location of the "USMT2.UNC" folder. Do not browse
to or select the IMG00001.DAT file, only the USMT2.UNC folder itself.

For example, my location is: C:\Old Computer Files\Transfers\USMT2.UNC

The .DAT file within the USMT2.UNC folder should be named IMG00001.DAT
There should also be a file named "status". If you have these two files within
the USMT2.UNC folder, you should only browse to the "USMT2.UNC" folder
when using the wizard.

I saved the files and transfer wizard backup, which was USMT2.UNC to a
USB hard drive. I plugged that hard drive into my laptop, which
recognized it a drive E:\, and I could read the "UNC" file using Win
Explorer. The folder contained four files: 3 ".DAT" files, numbered
00001, 00002 and 00003, a file named status.

In running the files and setting wizard on the laptop I tell it that
"I don't need the Wizard Disk..." and that the backup files are on
"Other" I then point the wizard to E:\USMT2.UNC.

I get the following error message: "The location that you specified
does not contain stored information.
Please type a valid folder path into the edit box. If you entered a
path to the folder on a removable disk, the disk must be in the

I am getting the exact same error. This is not "user error", as a I use this
tool frequently for our clients in a customer support capacity. The file
names are correct. The folder pointer is correct. It fails to recognise the
collected data on both networked and local drives. Both file systems are
NTFS. XP home edition is on the old computer, to a XP administrative is on
the new. I'm out of ideas here.

I too get the same error. I also did the same steps. In my USMT2.UNC folder,
there are 3 files, IMG00001 AND IMG00002 (both are DAT files) and status. Is
there any back door method to extract this files.

Usually this error appears if some necessary application programs aren't
installed in the new PC, especially winzip, acrobat reader. As for me, I've
reinstalled all the apps but still get the error.
