Hi,

Doesn anyone now if there are some Windows XP settings to make it not to
keep files "in use" after files are closed.
For excample I copy from CD mp3 folder to drive HDD and then decide to
delete this folder, but I can't as Windows tells they are in use.
I must restart computer to delete these files.

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for a reply. Can you tell also what process to stop from task
manager?
I just wanted to delete a folder, which Windows XP has stated for 2 days as
being in use or something.

No you don't have to turn off the computer. What you can do is Change
Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options... | General | Classic View. Then
try I bet you can delete the folder. This is a problem with Web View.

Hi George,

Thanks for a reply.
I never used a web view but always classic one.
A nuisance indeed.

Hi Rina,

Without knowing more......

Boot into safe mode and delete it from there. If possible, try to rename
the folder, then try again.

Hi Kelly,

Can you explain please, why it's better to delete from safe mode???
Why to try to rename the file? What's results one can expect then?
Why not just deleting isn't wise to do?
PS. As written in my initial post, I can delete these files after restart.
But restaring computer just to be able to delete one 100% normally named
file doesn't feel comfortable, at least IMO.
That's why I asked.

If you are always using classic view and you cannot delete a folder after
you put an mp3 (assuming not Read-only) in there then you have something
else going on unless I misunderstood what was happening. The Web View can
keep a call to the mp3 after you drop an mp3 in a folder. There are a couple
of ways of ending that call. One is to switch to classic view and close
Explorer and reopen it to remove the folder. Another way is to choose a
different mp3 not in the folder you want to remove. Another of course is
rebooting. Like I said this issue is a result of Web View. So if you aren't
using it I am at a loss. This can happen because of installed codecs also
but without Web View the issue should not arise.

Hi George,

No, it's the bug or something, I have experienced it with xpp and w2k. And I
guess that someone might have have more info of this nuisance.

As told, in a classic view, sometimes explorer still keeps files open after
I have closed that application I used to access these.
It may be that after writing folder of different (totally passive, whatever
files, far from system folders, with short or normal path length) files with
Nero to CDR and closing Nero the folder may be still left open, so that I
can't delete 1) the folder or 2) the content of the folder. Another
application which has revealed the same problem is Ulead Photo Explorer.
After viewing my photos, I can't delete these until rebooting. And that
ins't a rule but just happens sometimes on different computers and rather
often.
Certainly it's still caused by op system, as it may occur after just copying
files from CD to HDD, that I can't delete these files until rebooting, as
system keeps these open.

I have always checked with task manager, that all named processes have been
really stopped and that there really isn't any other known way but to
remeber after next reboot to go and delete these files.
Photo explorer and Nero are appliactions most likely to reveal this
behaviour of Windows Xp or W2k as these are used these for file handling.
But still these use calls to underlying op system which is most likely to
then rather often fails to release these later.

You know I had this problem with Adobe Photoshop. In that case even
switching to classic view did not fix it. To tell you the truth I never did
figure it out. If I recall correctly even logging out did not fix it. And no
nothing in Task Manager was there indicating Photoshop was still running.
It was a pain in the butt. I could not delete Photoshop images after making
them. I sympathize with you I know what you are talking about. This was in
Win2K.

Hi,

Right now I have on my HDD 4.5 Gb of files I copied "temporarily" from DVDR
to HDD to verify DVDR writing quality.
Instantly after copying to HDD were finished, I tried but couldn't delete
these 541 files.
I know from multiple earlier experiences that these can be deleted after
computer restart without any problem.
