Files in sorted order

I am attempting to scan a couple of hundred slides for a friend and burn
them to a DVD. Even though I am scanning them in the date order the slides
were taken they keep coming out of this order. I know I can click on the
date modified title and it puts them into the correctly scanned order but it
will not stay this way. I have tried going into View, Arrange Icons by,
Modified but still the files resort themselves.

What am I doing wrong, or is there no way to keep these files in the one
position, ( as scanned, mostly on the same day but at a different time)

The Default for Windows XP is to remember the view settings for the 400 most
recently used folders.
