The last few days the number of files on my hard drive has been going up, for
no apparent reason. A week ago I had about 120K files (about 55% of
capacity). Today I have over 150K files. Also, my CPU activity seems to
spike up and down, again, for no apparent reason. I did download some
freeware recently that I don't use, so I went to Add/Remove Programs and got
rid of it all, but the number of files on the hard drive is virtually
unchanged.

Any suggestions? I have a virus scan and firewall that are both up to date,
and I have run Spybot, AdAware and Windows Defender, and they all say
everything is OK. So, how did I get over 30K files in a few days?

temporary internet files? if your using ie, click on tools, internet
options, and click clear history, clear cookies, clear files.. now
check, also if you have open any large zip files lately they are
usually cached into windows/temp/ each time. I would recommend getting
some decent malware software and rescanning though, does sound
suspicious of adware to me.. get yourself spysweeper and avast!
antivirus.

Thanks, Flamer.

I do clean the IE files out regularly, so that isn't the issue. I also
checked Windows temp and that isn't a problem either. I did buy SpySweepr
and it found a few items that the others missed. But the files are still
there.

Thanks for the help, though.
