Files disappeared off local drive

I have a laptop running XP Pro. The user is no longer connecting to our
network so I set the laptop to no longer attempt to synchronize the my
documents folder. When I did that all the files stored in her local my
documents folder disappeared. Why?

I should think that the program is on her laptop - the prog was looking for the
source or just the old folder - found nothing and therefore rightly said that
there should be nothing on the laptop. Should have instructed the laptop prog
not to attempt to synchronise.
