Hey guys, I have a major problem. My files are disappearing! Its quite
gradual, just one or two every now and then, whenever i restart/shut down my
PC. A couple went missing today. They are on the "recent documents" list but
when i click on them they cant be found. Nor can i locate them in my hard
drive. Any ideas? This is a real worry, and those files that went missing
today are very important. Any clues as to how i could get them back??

Have the files gone missing or have they just been replaced by newer
files?

Use the search function in Windows Explorer to look for the "missing"
file"!

To show your most recently used documents on the Start menu
Right-click the Start button, and then click Properties.
On the Start Menu tab, click Start menu, and then click Customize.
On the Advanced tab, select the List my most recently opened documents
check box.
The next time you click Start, the My Recent Documents folder is on the
Start menu. This folder contains the documents and files you opened
recently.
Note
On the Advanced tab, click Clear List to empty the My Recent Documents
folder. This does not delete the documents from the computer.

the files have just gone. I tried the search function and no sign....they
just appear in the recent documents list because I accessed them before i
restarted my PC

ok, this might
be an unknown solution to you.

go to file manager, right click
on a drive or partition, select properties
and in the tools tab you will find the
chkdsk. this will rebuild your file table.

Can you give an example of one of the files, which has gone missing?

I would try HD Tune (freeware).
Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter
and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Also do a full surface scan with HD Tune.

What is the make and model of the hard drive?

Did you run a full surface scan. Were they any bad sectors?

In which partition were the files located?

Have backed up the remaining files?

Have you checked Event Viewer for Error Reports?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements? Have you run an
anti-virus scan?

Do you use macros in your spreadsheets?

What disk utilities do you use?
