This is usually caused by the hand not being quite as steady as one
would want. Try:

1. Right-click on the file you want to copy and while holding down the
right mouse button drag the file to the desired location. When you
release the right mouse button, you'll get a context menu where you can
choose "Copy" (left-click).

a. To select multiple files adjacent to each other, left-click on the
first one to select it, then press Shift and go down to the last file
in the series and left click on it. All those files will now be
selected. Right-click on any of the files and proceed as above.

b. To select multiple files not adjacent to each other, do as above but
hold down Ctrl instead of Shift.

2. Lower the mouse sensitivity from the Mouse applet in Control Panel.

Hello Claire, I know exactly what you're doing wrong. When you delete files, try deleting them one by one, and slowly. You can delete more than one at a time, but hilight them slowly....say 3 seconds in between each one. Too fast a deletion results in a re-creation of the file with a number after it. You can slow your mouse down, or you can highlight files to be delete, but again, slowly, and then delete. SLOWLY is the trick!

Good luck to you! Michael

hi malke, tried this but i do not want to copy any files i wish to delete all
the files but when i do so they recopy themselves e.g copy of 15 - copy of 16
and so on when i select the file and press delete it delets from the current
position and re enters at the bottom of the file column. does this make sence
to you

The advice is the same. You are moving the mouse slightly. Just use the
advice I gave you but substitute "Delete" for "Copy"!

Also, don't forget that if you attempt to delete SYSTEM files (files
with the SYSTEM attribute set), they will ALWAYS be recreated by XP.
