I have 2 HDs. The primary needed to be re-formatted and the secondary, on
which I had almost everything backed up started to have problems in the
shop. The tech was able to save everything but now I can't open most files.
Some have an .nco extension that wasn't there before but many still show up
on the directory with their proper size, type, and date modified.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might recover these files?

Thanks.

What file types? What are you trying to open them with? What happens when
you try?

Extension: NCO
Nero BackItUp Compressed Backup File
Nero’s digital media suite offers DVD/CD burning, editing and authoring,
video, audio, photo, networking and back-up applications. If you right click
the file and select "Open with Nero BackItUp Restore", you will get a
conventional "Save as..." dialog box from which you can save the file
uncompressed and with its normal extension in whichever location you choose.

They are MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

Word opens a window that starts at the top right with "File Conversion" and
the "Preview" window has jibberish.

PowerPoint opens with "PowerPoint cannot opent the typ of file represented
by" [file name]

Excel opens a spreadsheet full of jibberish.

Thanks.

If you still have the drive then you might be able to send it in to one of
the drive recovery services.
