Files and Settings Transfer Wizard crash

I've been trying to send my files from an old Win ME computer to my hot new XP Pro one via the Wizard and a serial cable. But the old machine always spends an hour or so "compressing files" and then tells me there's not enough room on the drive to store it, at which point I have to reboot. I've tried specifying files only and narrowing the collection down to one or two folders, but everytime I tell the machine to start, it goew through every file on the system and starts compressing them all, with the same result. How do you get the program to just transfer the files that you WANT sent over? I've got a 40 Gig drive on the old machine, with 35 GIG tied up, but what I want transferred is only about 10 gig. If anybody's got a fix, I'd sure like to hear it.

10 GB over serial cable... my sympathies :(
Can you just attach the old disc to the XP machine?
