filenames over written by shortcut name

Thanks to xps irritatating paranoia, to make sure that everyone who needs
access to my work files has it I've had to bury them ib Documents and
settings/all users etc etc. As it was fairly tedious to go through the whole
tree everytime I want to save an AutoCAD file as a dxf, I created a shortcut
on my desktop. However everytime I click on this shortcut whilst saving, my
file's name is replaced by the shortcut name. Is there a way to stop this
happening?
I don't always notice and then end up trying to remember what the file name
should have been.

What application is Saving the file. AutoCAD? If this is so, the AutoCAD
file is saving the file in SHortname form. How old is this AutoCAD,
version?

It's the most up-to-date; Autodesk Civil 3d 2007.
I did post this question on the autodesk forums but didn't get an answer so
I figured it may be a windows thing. It's not a huge problem just a bit of
an irritant, but I'd like to stop it if it's possible. Are you thinking there
may be a setting in AutoCad I can change?
Thanks.

I think a better solution is to figure out why your files weren't
available to others and change that. In your first post, you didn't say
where you were originally saving the files that made them inaccessible
and you didn't say (or I missed it) what version of XP you have.

XP Home does not allow sharing of users' home directories (My Documents)
or Program Files. Instead, put files to be shared in the Shared
Documents folder or create a new folder at the root of the system drive
(usually C:\).

XP Pro can share out files anywhere if you turn off Simple Sharing
(Folder Options>View tab).

Look in AutoCad's options/preferences to see if you can change the
default save location to where you choose and do so. If not, then do a
"Save As" and the system will remember the location the next time.

Get the sharing set up properly, save your files in a better place, and
you will still be able to make shortcuts to your files without any
naming problems.

It's xp pro 2002.
And I probably should also mention my employers' paranoid tendencies which
is why I've had to put things into shared documents in the first place;
they're planning to restrict acccess to the root C directory as part of their
atempts to stop any sort of personalising of office computers (we already
have to put up with a screensaver which flashes political slogans!); I did
use to keep everything straight off C: but was told to move it.

Unfortunately AutoCAD only seems to allow the setting of a default autosave
directory but not for save as.

I've just checked simple sharing and it was already off.
Thanks for trying,

Then why aren't you using the Shared Documents folder? I'm sorry but I
don't understand that.

Your network is apparently on a domain. Go to the IT Dept. and have them
create a folder where you can save AutoCAD documents that need to be
shared.

If you have a domain, you shouldn't be saving anything on the local
workstation anyway. There should be a folder on the server with
appropriate permissions set.

I am using the shared documents folder, which makes the address
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared
Documents\aawork\aasites\sitename\sitecode\cad\
slightly longer than
desktop\aasites
which is why I wanted a shortcut to aasites in the first place.
And saving on the network is only an option if the network is stable, which
it never has been (local government and IT efficiency don't go together). As
the only person working on the C drive when the network goes down, I can
continue working. Plus which when the network occasionally replaces peoples
work with older versions (don't ask me why it does that but it does) I'm
unaffected. It's also far less likely that someone will accidently delete or
move my files (which happens on occasion)

However we've established that the problem seems to be an AutoCAD one, as
it's the only software that does overwrites filenames with shortcut names.
So I shall return to the autodesk forum.

Thanks for trying

Well, I'm sorry that I wasn't able to offer you a workable solution.
Autodesk tech support/forum does seem like your next logical step.

Good luck,
