file transfers between 2 computers on the same network

how can you tranfer files to and from 2 computeres on the same network . i
have enabled file sharing , but i cannot play any of the shared files with my
media player. will a data transfer cable between the 2 work or will the data
just collide as one seeks the other and so forth ? can you use a 25 pin. use
a 9 pin. both a 25 pin and a 9 pin at the same time ?
