Greetings,
In order to send files through Messenger via a LAN with a router, the router will need to
support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). Depending on the router, there may be a firmware
update available for it which would add UPnP functionality, or your router may already
support it, but you need to turn on its UPnP capabilities in its configuration.
Assuming you have met the UPnP restriction, you'll also need to use MSN Messenger 5 or 6:
http://messenger.msn.com/Download
or Windows Messenger 5:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=77c3799f-6388-4193-8002-be55584c1ac1
as the built-in Windows Messenger 4.x in Windows XP does not support UPnP-enabled file
transfer.
Also, if you still continue to have problems, if both you and your contact use MSN Messenger
6 (
http://messenger.msn.com/Download), it has several different ways to get around these
connection problems, including just sending your file directly through the Messenger servers
(which should work in almost every instance, albeit slowly).
