Is there any way to transfer settings from one version of XP to another, even
if they're not on separate machines? My problem is that my settings are
stuck on computer A's HDD, (computer A is totaled aside from the HDD), which
is now plugged into computer B. B is the computer I want to use the settings
on. However, I can't boot from A, so I can't create a file package to 'send
over'. Is there anyway to change the default backup settings so that it
would package Computer A's?

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

What happens if you boot to recovery console and use the /fixboot command?

This link isn't really what you want BUT should lead you in the right
direction:

Problems with boot.ini:

From there you might be able to get a dual boot system (you'll need to do a
repair install after that probably) and you should be able to migrate your
system settings over to the new one using FAST. I'd try that if you have a
couple of hours to blow.

Settings are stored in a folder under "Documents and settings" which is
normally named after the user. In here you'l find all your desktop stuff,
etc. and a file called "ntuser.dat" which contains most of your settings.
Some of your settings will be in the "Applciation Data " subfolder.

so, Log on as Adminsitrator.

Go into Explorer's settings, and untick the options that hide system and
hidden files. (Or better, use a third-party program like Servant Salamander,
but again set it to copy hidden files)

Go into the old drive, and look in "documents and settings" for your old
profile folder. This contains all of your old cookies, favourites, etc, and
you could just copy these into your present provfile, if that is adequate.

Alternatively for a complete transfer:

1. Create a user with the exact-same name as was used on the old machine.
2. Log on as that user once.
3. Log off, and back-on as Administrator.
4. Copy the entire old profile (including hidden files) into the new
profile-folder.
5. Log back-on as the user, and you should have your previous settings,
desktop,etc.
