file size is excessive

I have a 9 page document (reduced from a document that was
42 pages). The new document takes up 32,000 KB of space.
Normally, I would expect it to take up 32KB of space
(approx). What can I do to get the size down. (I have
not added graphics or links. All I have done is taken
text out).

A 32Mb document is extremely excessive!! I'd recommend copying the document
using a copy and paste into a new document, reformat it accordingly and use
the new version.

Whatever metadata there is in the huge version, you're very unlikely do get
rid of all that excess baggage. Far better to start with a new version of
the document.

There are a number of reasons for excessive file size, including:

1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools | Options.

2. Preview Picture: Clear the check box on the Summary tab of File |
Properties.

3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically save version on
close" is not turned on.

4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes):
Highlight Changes: Make sure "Highlight changes on screen" is turned on.
Accept/Reject Changes: If "Accept All" or "Reject All" is available then
revisions are present; accept or reject all changes, then turn Track Changes
off.

5. Embedded True Type fonts (Tools | Options | Save); embedding fonts should
be avoided wherever possible.

6. Embedded graphics: When feasible, it is preferable to link the graphics.
