I am running xp home over a 3 machine WLAN, I want to add a folder to the
shared folder but be the only one who can change any of the files that are
within it.
When I right click on the folder it tells me to check the box if I want to
make the folder private, but the box is greyed out and I cannot make it
private. What do I do, how can I make this file private and secure?

I don't think the XP file sharing has that capability. You may be able
to password protect the file to provide some degree of protection, but that
will depend on the file type.

On XP pro (I am assuming you are using XP home) I believe you can set up
directory rights be individual.

On my network with two XP machines, right click on a folder, select
Sharing and Security. That yields two boxes, one for Local Sharing and
Security and another one for Network Sharing and Security. That second
box has two options, one to designated the folder as shared (with an
entry box for the name), and then a second option (if the first is
checked) to allow network users to change files in that folder. Just
leave that one unchecked.

Adding a folder to the "shared folder" may be a different process.
What I've just described is for making any existing folder shared.
