I use seperate accounts for each person in the family. The problem is when
somone other than the original author of a document opens it. It is a read
only document. I have tried changing the properties from read only but that
has not worked.

I also do not have access to anyhting related to "simple file sharing" in
folder options. Any ideas on that too?

XPHome uses "simple file sharing" by default ...this is for networking...

your security settings may not allow the other users to change your docs.

this may give you some insight

You don't have anything related to "simple file sharing" in your options
because you have XP Home which only uses that method (guest). Put documents
to be shared in the Shared Documents folder and everyone will be able to
work with them.

These files are in the shared documents folder and they still cannot be
modified.

Then boot into Safe Mode and log onto an account with administrative
privileges. Now you will be able to right-click on one of the files and
look at its owner. Add "Everyone" to Permissions and give full control to
"Everyone".

Otherwise, are all the problem files created in one word processor or
program such as MS Word? If these are MS Word documents, if adding
"Everyone" doesn't help then post in the MS Word newsgroup. Make sure you
include the version of Word you're using.

And another tack to take - were you ever able to share these documents
successfully? If so, what changed?

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?
