File sharing/sending with another Computer using the internet?

A friend has a 22mb file that he wants to send to me. Road Runner, his ISP,
has a 2mb attachment limit. We both use Road Runner for an ISP. He has
Windows XP Pro, and I have Windows XP home. Is there a simple way for two
Windows XP computers to send or share files using the internet, taking
advantage of the RR speed, without having to purchase third party software
or hardware?

If both of you have accounts on AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, or
Yahoo Messenger, I believe any of these programs will allow you to
transfer files from one computer to the other over the Internet.

Or, if you really want to get creative, one of you could run a Free web
server on your computer to serve the files to the other (note that
you'll probably have to run the server one some port other than the
default Port 80, as RR no doubt has this port blocked for its users).

In the worst case: As Andrew S. Tanenbaum put it, "Never underestimate
the bandwidth of a station wagon full of [CDs] hurtling down the
highway." =)

if either of you do choose the first option using a messanger service beaware if either of you have a router or firewall, you will need to use a port forwarding or allow some ports to be open for a little while. You would just need to find out what ports the messanger uses. With my experience in think AOL's AIM uses 5000 or 5190 (5190 according to the netstat -a command in the command prompt

There are many file splitter programs available if you just google for them.
While you would have to split the file 12 times, they work very well and you
could email them as an attachment. I use RR and have split up a 24 mb file
into 6 parts and emailed them to a friend with dsl with no problems, I'm
surprised at your 2mb limit.

Thanks to all for the information. It seems like the Windows Messenger
"Send A File" command might be the easiest solution.

There is a great freeware program called Chainsaw which will allow you to
split the file into sections small enough to email. It can be found here

You can find another freeware file splitter here

My buddy with comcast cable has a 500K file attachment limit.

Thank you Carolyn. I tried Chainsaw. It's fast, and I like the simple drag
and drop interface. I also like the fact that the chunk files, and batch
file, are automatically gone when the merge batch file is used. Some of the
best utilities are free.

You've gotten a number of suugestions. If you have trouble with
any of these, consider a low-tech solution: write the file to a
CD and send it by mail.

Thank you for responding. I always knew that burning to CD, and sending by
snail mail was an option. But, there's packing the CD, then going to the
P.O., which in my case is a trek, living on one of the smaller Hawaiian
islands. Then there's the time factor. My mail has to go from my island to
Honolulu, and then on to the mainland. It could take up to four days. Even
Express Mail won't promise second day delivery from here. Yes, I have
gotten some good suggestions from responses in this group. For files 7MB or
less, I'll use Chainsaw, split them, and email the splits and merge batch
file. For files larger than 7MB, where the recipient has DSL or a cable
connection, I'll do a live "Send a File" with Windows Messenger. If the
recipient doesn't have DSL or a cable connection, then I'll be forced to
burn a CD and use snail mail.
