This is a problem that I have had for a long time. I have two xp pro computers connected to a dsl router one via a ethernet and one usb connection. I can ping both computers but cannot file share. I get the access denied you do not have permission message. I have disabled ICS and all firewalls but still the problems persist. I even reloaded windows clean install and it worked on the one computer for a while than seemingly randomly stopped. the only thing that restored it was to do a system restore but now I can no longer do that. I have run reg cleaner periodically and spybot and adaware periodically and could these programs have altered my registry to prevent file sharing? I have enabled simple file sharing.

Hello
Have you got File and Print sharing installed in the Local Area Connection
Properties.

yes I do, I even have a laptop connected to the network with a wireless card, the dsl/router is wireless too and I can file share with that computer from eithor windows xp pro machine. wierd isn't it?

Hello
I can give you a map as to how I got mine setup, I am running a wired
network 2 pro, 1 home,
cable modem to 4 port Linksys Router to computers via Cat5 cable.

First open the Properties of My Network Places, delete or disable all
connections except your internet connection, (both computers). Right click
your IC go to Properties the Local Area Connection Properties will open,
install Client for MS Network, File & Print Sharing, Internet
Protocol(TCP/IP), click the Advanced Tab turn off the Firewall,(the router
will provide the firewall)

click OK. Now back on your Network Connections click on the left of the
page, Setup a Small Home Network, the wizard will open then just follow the
instructions, when you get to the point to Create a Floppy then do so, then
you just run it on the other computer,(insert the floppy in the other puter
open My Computer double click A drive then double click the link that
appears. Be sure to name your Workgroup (not domain) the same and give each
computer a different name.

To hook up Printer sharing just install the printer on the host computer go
to Printer and Faxes right click your printer, then go to Sharing, then set
it to Share then name it, click OK.

Go to the other computer open Printer & Faxes on the left of the page click
and a printer then follow the instructions.

The only difference in this and mine is I have NWLink NetBIOS, NWLink
IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Protocol installed and that allows me to connect to the
others with or w/o the firewall on.

What does this mean? "The only difference in this and mine is I have NWLink NetBIOS, NWLin
IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Protocol installed and that allows me to connect to th
others with or w/o the firewall on."

I tried everything you did already and it did not work but I do not understand what your last statement means, what is nwlink netbios, nwlink/ipx/spx/netbios protocol, do I need that installed? and if so how do you install it
