Don

I would like to have my shared files accessible
to "contain" computers on our LAN (all the same
workgroup). Presently everyone has access to them.

I would think I would need to have a password associated
with a particular file or folder.

I'm using XP professional with simple file sharing
disabled.

Would appreciate any guidance.

Windows XP doesn't use share level passwords. Since you are using XP
Professional, you can disable Simple File sharing and setup an access
control lists that specify users and their allowed mode on a NTFS drive. You
can create a compressed folder and define a password for it. Anyone who
tries to access that folder will be prompted to enter that password. Details
here.

Thanks for your reply.
Can I still generate a password for an folder without
compressing it.
Thanks

Greetings Don,

Nope. You cannot password protect folders because Windows XP replaces
passwords with two alteratives: Simple File Sharing and Access Control
Lists. You can define a password to the Guest account. Then anyone who tries
to access your computer will be prompted to enter that password.
