File Sharing/Network Trouble

So I have my desktop pc wired to a router and a wireless laptop. both have
great internet connections though cannot communicate to each other.
Extrememly frustrated. I've been trying to get this to work for almost two
months now and nothing I do seems to work. Everything worked several months
ago then went to a convention and the computer tech there worked on my pc to
get me on line while there and ever since back in my home office I cannot get
it to network (share files) again. I've even purchased a new router figuring
I could start all over but still no success. Though.....I have had the file
sharing work in intervals. Maybe for less then an hour and all of a sudden
nothing again. Mostly what I get is "you might not have permission to use
this network resource". I get that when I click on the computer I want to
access when I view my workgroup. By the way, I am on Windows XP Pro on both
the laptop and pc. Help if you can?!

what do you receive if using net view \\remotepcname? if it is system error 5, this is permission issue; if it is system error 53, this is name resolution issue or connectivity issue.

System Errors If the net view command fails with a "System error 5 has occurred. ... VPN Case Study - Can ping VPN server but receive System error 53 using net use ...

Look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

not exactly sure what you mean here. could you please explain further what
you are suggesting I try?

i will look at the article you suggest but could you explain how i look at
the items you suggested. i'm pretty good at working around windows but a bit
foreign to the "ipconfig thing" and need a little more guidence please if you
think it would help my problem.

The three diagnostics - "browstat", "ipconfig", and "net config" - produce logs
which describe the status of key elements used in Windows Networking. The
articles explain briefly what important things, in the logs, you can look at. I
haven't yet found a comprehensive manual explaining everything, so I use my
articles.

Post the logs here, and I will show you what they indicate. Instructions are in
my articles.

You are not alone -- See "File Sharing Over a Network" I posted 5/7 in this
forum. I will follow your threads to see if you get a fix.

Silly thing Chuck, I cannot seem to figure out how to copy and past the
ipconfig details that reported on the command prompt. I did notice that it
is saying that NetBios over tcpip is disabled even though I have it enabled
when i go into each connections tpip properties?

See my article on ipconfig:

To get ipconfig data for immediate examination, simply type "ipconfig /all" into
a command window.

If you want the data so it is easily compared between computers, you need to
export the data into a text file.
* Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" (less the "") into a command window.
* Then,
o Type "notepad c:\ipconfig.txt" (less the "") into the same command
window, for immediate examination.
o Or, copy file c:\ipconfig.txt to another computer, for comparative
examination.

Check status of required protocols and services, for the NetBT issue:
