File sharing issue

Hi all.

I have a home network, desktop and laptop, both running XP Pro SP2.Both
machines have 3 users.

This is my problem: I want to see my documents on both machines over the
network, so i set the folders to 'share on network'. I can now see laptop
docs from desktop and vice-versa. However, if someone else logs on, because
my docs is a shared folder, others can also see my files.

Can you please tell me how to set up so that my docs is shared, but only
visible to me. Do I have to set permissions somewhere in the hidden depths
of Windows? Any help would be appreciated.

Phil,

With XP Pro, you need to disable Simple File Sharing, and setup your private
folders to be shared to your account only. Not really in the hidden depths.

Are there any folders that XP will NOT allow to be shared on a home network?

If you're using Guest authentication (either under Simple or Advanced File
Sharing), "C:\Program Files", "C:\Windows", and any part of My Documents (the
folder structures personal to each individual user), can't be accessed thru the
network. You can share them, but the shares won't be accessible.
 
I'd would like to have all documents available on each computer on my home
network. And I would like saving the document files to be automated, or
nearly so. Can you suggest the easiset way to do that? (you've been very
helpful!!) I'm running XP either home or pro on all computers and would
appreciate your suggestion.

shared thru the network, you have to consider the realities of XP Home vs Pro,
Simple vs Advanced File Sharing, and Guest vs authenticated access. This

Saving documents is a very broad subject, and one with many possible solutions.
You can save documents in different folders on the same computer, or in folders
on another computer. You can push saves (initiate a copy process from the
computer that they're on), or pull saves (initiate a copy process from a backup
server).

You can copy to removable media (CD or Zip drive), or simply to the hard drive.
Some media products will bundle backup software. You may also find something to
your liking at one or more freeware websites (two which I use are MajorGeeks
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/> and Tucows <http://www.tucows.com/>). Or you may
write your own scripts, and use the Windows Scheduler to automate their running.

You can get lots of advice here, in and most every techie forum on the web, but
you need to think about, and articulate, your preferences.
