Have a client with a 3 PC wireless LAN which has been mostly ok for 3 years.
Now 1 pc is asking for a password to access data on 1 other PC, in 1
direction only.
Password/login dialog box is not very informative, but here are details:
1. We are at PC#3 = "NEW_PC", but the login dialog box title is "Connect to
NEW_PC" as if it is connecting to itself!
2. Then is says "Connecting to Rick", which is correct. (PC#2 = "RICK")
3. The ghosted user name in dialog box is "NEW_PC\Guest" (even though we are
logged on as default user with admin privileges. All guest accounts are off.
4. The space for the password is too short for the WEP encryption code, so i
don't think that's what it wants.
Setup:
Linksys BEFW11S4 ver 2 router
1 PC is connected to router's LAN port by cable, 2 are wireless only.
Router is supplying DHCP. Using WEP encryption with 26 characters.
All 3 PCs WinXP SP2.
All connect to Comcast just fine.
All ping both ways fine. All LAN settings and "ipconfig /all" check out and
all same.
Nothing in the event logs
No boot problems
No passwords of any kind have ever been set on any of the 3 PCs (except WEP
encryption)
Call the PC's 1, "RITA", 2 "RICK", 3 "NEW_PC":
#1 no problem to other 2 in either direction
#2 no problem to other 2 in either direction
#3 no problem except accessing #2 asks for PW
It is not:
Firewall software
PestPatrol
Trend Micro PC-cilin
User setups in security
I tried:
* Turning on & off guest accounts.
*Linksys support had never heard of such a situation.
Your thoughts?
