If I use the Windows Search function to look for files and delete them are
they gone? Is there an alternative way to search for and delete files?

Whether you locate a file by search or manually go to the folder in which
it's located, when it's delete it's deleted. It should be placed in the
Recycle bin unless you deleted it in such a way as to bypass the recycle
bin.

Note: When a file is deleted it's contents are not removed from the drive.
The space it occupies is marked as available and it is removed from the
directory listing, but the file still exists until that space is
overwritten. Therefore, deleted files can in some cases be recovered using
file recovery software.

Alternative way is knowing where they are, opening containing folder, and
directly deleting. As Roja said, check the Recycle Bin for "permanent"
deletion.
