Don't know when it happened, but when I try to use the file search from the
start menu, it doesn't work at all. It's as if the program doesn't exist. I'm
not sure if I need to try to reinstall just that or if more is needed to get
it working again. I'm using XP Pro & I have the disc. Thanks for any help

Try this

1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator
permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This
reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.
