I have set up a new spreadsheet and I am hoping to keep from over-ridin
it inadvertently. Is there a way to fix the spreadsheet that it is no
possible to save over top - you have to save as with a new file name

Denhar

Make it a template (File>save as...>Template). This way you will only be
able to 'save as'

Another option is to use windows explorer to mark the .xls as readonly.

(But anyone can change that attribute, too.)

If you're really worried, maybe putting the workbook on a shared drive that only
you have write access would be best. You'll have to contact your IT folks to
set it up (a guess).

No. This is a windows setting and only affects that one file.

Or did you mean the readonly network drive?

The users would have to save to a drive/folder they have write access to.
