File properties permanent change

We have recently changed our company name...and therefore
need to change the name that appears in the file
properties.

I've managed to change normal.dot to accept the new
company name...and if a new file is created by finding
normal.dot in Explorer, right clicking -> New....then the
new file that is created has the new name.

HOWEVER, when we open up Word in the normal way,
the "properties" section still shows the old company
name. Which means we have to manually change it on each
file :(
Any help would be gratefully received. :)

Found the answer ....

"How to Change the Company Name and User Name After Setup"

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;233499

I've used the instructions in that link and have searched through the
registry for any instance of the old company name but still have new
Word documents created with the old company name.

I'd really appreciate anyone with a clue on how this is happening to let
me know. A way to stop it in the future would be great too.

Thanks.

What version of Word? Word 97 has to be reinstalled to change the company
name. In subsequent versions, the Registry hack works.

Doesn't work here.

Microsoft Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3)

Have you looked at "OFF2000: How to Change Company Name and User Name After
Setup" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=233499 ?

Yes. I have followed the instructions on that page several times and
have checked all GUID's.

The odd thing is that the old company name still gets installed into a
new document even though I can't find the name anywhere in any .dot file
or in the registry.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm stumped. Does the User Information tab of Tools | Options show the
Company? ISTR that some versions do display this, though it's not shown in
Word 2003.

No, Tools Options does not show company in 2000.

Sorry to hear you're stumped, so am I. I can't find any reference
anywhere meaningful to the old company name, and I've done binary
searches of all files and though the registry, yet it still appears in
any newly created document.

If you do find anything, please post, and in the meantime I am still
looking for something that will clean that name out of lots of existing
Word documents.

Thanks.

Hi Charles,

If you have changed the Company name in the Registry using the KB
article Suzanne referenced then make sure the File Properties in your
Normal.dot does not contain the Company name.

Of course I made sure of that long ago. Normal.dot does not contain the
Company name.

Here's another puzzler - If I open Word by doubleclicking on the
Normal.dot file itself, the old company name is NOT created in File
Properties. (Whereas if I just use the Word shortcut, it is.)

Hi Charles,

What is the target for the shortcut?

Also did you follow the instructions in the KB for your operating
system? For example if you have Windows XP you need to use:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Userdata\SID\
Products\GUID\InstallProperties

And then rename/delete the \Office\9.0\Common\UserInfo and
\Office\9.0\Word\Data keys in the Registry.

Thank You! both to you and Suzanne for your help.

I thought to try the removal procedure one more time and this time it
did work (as far as I can see now).

I don't know where my procedure failed previously since the UserData and
Data keys are recreated but I did save exported backups and the data in
it is different now.

(Now all I need to do is figure out how to fix the (hundreds of)
mispropertied docs.

Thanks again for your attention in fixing this.

Hi Charles,

Glad to hear you have it sorted. I do know if you don't follow the
exact steps, change the Company name and rename both Word Reg keys
then it will not work. :-)

As for your previously created documents you might check into using
Dsofile.exe which allow you to edit file properties using Visual
Basic. More information and an example template can be found in this
article:

Thanks Beth. Seems promising but will require some looking at to figure
out how to work it. I will check it out.

Appreciate all your help.
