Greetings all,

I just reinstalled Windows and did something that caused a problem i think.

When i start up Windows a file automatically opens up "C:/Windows/Program
Files/Common/bin" I can't for the life of me get it to stop. I've gone
into File Options looking for an option to check/uncheck but no luck.

Your prompt help is MUCHLY appreciated.

It sounds like you have malware (virus, spyware, etc..). Unfortunately most
of the time it is easier to format/reinstall your PC than trying to track
down all the files/registry settings the malware has created. I would
recommend you download the following tools and burn them to a cd prior to
reinstalling windows: "spybot search and destroy," "spyware blaster," and
"windows xp service pack 2". Then reinstall windows and, prior to connecting
it to the Internet, install these tools along with an antivirus program like
Norton AntiVirus 2005. Then connect your PC to the Internet and
download/install all the Windows updates, and all the updates for the
antivirus software and anti-spyware utilities.

Before you format and reinstall try downloading Hijackthis, adaware and
spybot and run them in safe mode. Also try the add/remove programs to
remove anything you think might look suspicious.

Thanks for the quick reply gents - fortunately i know for sure this is not a
spyware-virus problem. Not only was Windows just reinstalled but after
installing all my programs i ran Spybot, AdAware, etc. and nothing. And
nothing out of the ordinary running on startup.

It's just this stupid file that opens everytime i start/restart Windows (it
is a legit file)

Any other suggestions.

TIA,

Ray

Wes,

Thanks for the response - the file that opens is not a System32 folder but a
"Program Files/Common/bin" folder. It opens every time i start/restart
Windows. I've check everywhere i can think to stop the darn thing but no
luck !!!

Ray,

I know what folder opens, I read your post.

Did you read through KB170086?

Substitute Program Files\Common\bin for System32 when reading the article.

What entries *are* in the following keys on your machine?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Wes,

Yes i read the article and checked the registry under those keys mentioned -
there is nothing there that shouldn't be there (programs to open upon start)

I did notice that the offending folder is mentioned in the startup under
msconfig BUT it is unchecked. I then went into the folder and deleted the
program file from within (WinDVD Mgr.) Hopefully that will solve the
problem - i will keep you informed.

Thanks for your persistence in finding a solution.
