File Options Control Panel?

I installed WindowsXp (and SP1) and until today,
everything worked fine. Now, everything I attempt to
activate by clicking on the desktop icon or individual
program in the programs section after clicking "start"
initiates the following response, "This file does not have
a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Folder Options content
panel." I querried Microsoft knowledge base and received
references to a Binder File(?) and Microsoft Office XP
installation CD to possibly resolve this situation. How-
ever, I also ran Adaware today, but I don't think that
would affect anything to this degree. I need some
expertise, please.
