I am using Excel 2003. I have a workbook that contains
many worksheets and when I open this file, it is very
slow - the file is housed on our company network. Also
when I change from "normal" view to "page break view" is
it extremely slow to respond. Any ideas why and what I
can do to fix this problem.

Much thanks

In an ideal situation you wouldn't have a problem but the
file is subject to all kinds of other overhead when on a
company network server -- virus checkers, net traffic, etc.

Try coping it to your local machine and test the speed
there. The larger and more complex the workbook, the
greater liklihood it will break running across a network.

I have tried that solution by copying the file to my
desktop and I still have the same problem. If I make sure
that all of the worksheets contained in the workbook are
in "normal" view instead of "page break" view, then it
opens in about 10 seconds and I can move between
worksheets just fine. But if one or more worksheets are
in "page break" view then it takes about one minute
(sometimes longer) to open the workbook and the same to
move between worksheets. I have tried a hot fix that I
located in the knowledge base and also disabled the office
plug-ins in Norton and neither solve the problem. I
appreciate your response, but if you know of anything else
that might help, I would appreciate it.

Just a guess.

Maybe it's your printer driver that's slow. Can you change to a different
printer driver--you don't actually have to have the printer--just install
another driver.

If that helped, I'd visit your printer's web site and get a new/fresh driver to
see if that helped.

There was a thread recently that described a slowdown when changing printers.
Not quite the same and there wasn't a real resolution (so you're not alone!).

But here's the link--maybe something that Dirk tried will help you:

That was the problem. I updated driver from HP website
and still had the same problem. But when I selected the
network printer as default instead of this printer, the
problem was solved. Thank you so much for all of your
help.
