When I open an excel file in excel 2000, I get the message
file not found. I click cancel about 8 times to finally
get in my file. I thought maybe I had a stray cell
reference to a file that didn't exist, but I can't find
any obscure cell references. When I open the file in
excel 2002 at home, I do not get this error message. It
is driving me crazy because everytime I open this file at
work I have to click cancel so many times.

Any chance there's any code in the workbook referencing
another file, or buttons assigned macros in another
workbook?

In Excel2000, open a file, go to Tools, Options General and see if there is
anything entered in the Alternate STartup directory box. If so, Delete it

If not, find your XLStart folder and see if there is anythign in there other
than personal.xls
If so, try copying them to another folder

Thanks for your help! Actually, this spreadsheet doesn't
have any maacros. A lot of cells reference other cells in
various tabs of the spreadsheet, but there are no
references outside this spreadsheet. The file not found
message references file names that are strange such as
excelbug and temp file link.

Try using Bill Manville's FindLink utility to track down the links,
