File names for documents.

When I save a new document in Works a bar code appears in
the file name box. I delete this and type in the file
description and save it. When I look foe file only the
first letter of the file name appears. I have to go into
the file log and manually rename the file. I find this
most frustrating. How can I get rid of the bar code so
that I can put in a full file name?

The filename that Word suggests is usually (a) the content of the Title
document property (if any) or (b) the first text in the document, up to the
first punctuation mark or line break. It's remotely possible that a bar code
has been saved as the Title property of Normal.dot (if so, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm), but you
single-letter filename suggests a different problem, which occurs when Word
is set to (Windows 95 or 98) compatibility mode in Windows XP. Instructions
from Office MVP Beth Melton for correcting this:

To rectify:

- Locate WinWord.exe
- Right-click and select Properties
- Select the Compatibility tab
- See if you have a Compatibility Mode set
- If set remove the tick in "Run this program in compatibility mode"
