I have just noticed that files that I have had for some time have had their
file name header colors changed from black to blue.

Only about 20% of them have had this change applied and it has happened to
word and excel files. What does the blue color mean and how has this
happened?

I am running WinXP Home and have applied all of the latest updates on a
regular basis.

you did disk cleanup and allowed it to 'compress old files'.
start, help 'color files', read all about it.

It means that they have been compressed using NTFS file compression.
They will decompress for use on the fly. It probably happened on a Disk
Cleanup, one of the options being to compress old files to save space.
