When I open Powerpoint 2002, the file menu in the upper
left hand corner is missing - it either has a small
powerpoint icon in it's place, or starts with the edit
menu. Anyone have any idea why this is and how to get the
file menu back?
Thanks

I have a similar problem with my format menu, when i pull it down, it's very very very long and there's a ton of blank spaces in it. I can reset it, but that same problem still occurs

Sounds like you have a Macro or add-in that is inserting an item, but not
assigning all the properties. You should check what add-ins and macros are
loaded, try removing them and see if the problem stops. If it does, add
them back one at a time until it re-appears then write to the author and
report a bug.

If you need help accessing these, read this faq, it is a little off your
exact need, but tells you how to access the VBE.

i've removed all the addins, it still does it. What it does, it will add one extra blank spot in the format menu right above object each time I open PPT.

Have you checked the VBE for code? Press 'Alt + F11'

Look in the Project Explorer window there should be nothing except
VBAProject (Presentation 1) WITHOUT an plus sign next to it.

This is exactly how an auto_open routine that adds a button (poorly written
since it does not check for prior instances of itself) would function.

Have you ever installed any add-ins?

Jennifer, this one has me a little stumped, but a friend suggested that you
look to see if you have a COM add-in.

These are a little tricky to find, but the directions are in your PowerPoint
Help file. And the directions are not hard.

1) Under Help, just look-up COM, then Add-in, then unload. Follow the
directions on "Unload a COM add-in" and then "How" under 'add COM add-in
command to toolbar'.

a) You will need to display the COM add-in dialog box first.

b) Once you have done this, is there a COM add-in listed in the box? Is it
checked?

c) If a COM add-in is loaded and checked, try un-checking the box next to
the name.

d) OK out of the box and close down PowerPoint.

e) Then reopen it. Did the string of blank commands grow longer? If not,
try to reset your toolbars and see if they still grow these blank buttons.

If this resolves the problem, would you please post back. In fact, post
back either way; this is interesting.

it turned out that it was crystal graphics power plug graphs causing that issue. The version I had installed isn't compatible with Office XP. Once i uninstalled it, it solved the problem!

wow, that's a new one. Thanks for posting your resolution.

I am also lost the File and Edit command on top. I tried TAJ's suggestion but nothing appears. I would appreciate any suggestions as my next step I think is reload the program.
Thank you.

Found out my problem. I did not have the "Menu Bar" highlighted on the Customize -> Toolbar menu.
