I'm seeking a program, free or otherwise, where you can right-click on a
folder, then on the menu shown, choose to open the folder in a program that
allows you add comments to files. TIA.

Actually, I know of a program called Explorer Notes 2.0, that modifies
Explorer so you can have a comments column. Well, that's about 5 dollars to
buy. Just wondering if there is anything else. I'm just examining something
called AC Browser Plus. Good, but it did not put an option to open it, on
the menu you get when right-click on a folder. I'm running Windows 98 SE.

What is FileNote?
================

FileNote is little FREEWARE shell extension for Windows95/98/NT4 that
adds one command to context-menu of file object. This command lets
you easily edit or create text file, that has the same name as
the initial file, but with the TXT extension.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but maybe ..

If you have WinXP, you may have all you want already. Right
click the file name. Open the properties and select the
summary tab. There you find a panel that you can do
whatever you like including paste.

For Win98, ME, 2000 or XP, you may want Filenote. I do not
have the URL handy. It installs in the context menu. Select
it and it will call up your default text editor like notepad
where you can type whatever you want. When you close the
editor, it saves a .txt file with the same name as the
original file or application. This is the one I use.

RE: Explorer Notes 2.0. Is this the same prog as described at PCMag?

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,3871,00.asp
"Have you ever looked at a long list of files in your Documents folder
and despaired of ever finding the one you wanted? Are you outsmarting
yourself with clever, cryptic filenames or wearing out your fingers
with long filenames that don't tell you what you need to know? Explorer
Notes 2.0 solves these problems by letting you associate a note of up
to 255 characters with any file or folder. Explorer Notes 1.0
(introduced in PC Magazine, November 5, 1996) worked only under Windows
95 and was incompatible with Internet Explorer 4. Version 2.0
peacefully coexists with IE4 and Windows 98, and it adds support for
Windows NT 4 and the current beta release of Windows NT 5. If you
created notes with Version 1.0, you can import them into Version 2.0."

Note: PC Mag site: "The file you have selected to download is only
available by subscription or single purchase from PCMag.com." [ie, $].
Not sure, but don't think you can download without paying. [I have an
account there, so can't be certain if this is still true for
non-payers.]

I *think* this is the same program, no registration required to
download:

http://ftp.actrix.co.nz/windows/win32/desktop/EE20.ZIP

Anyway, is this the same program you're talking about? It *appears* to
be free, but I haven't installed it yet.

To Richard and others: have you looked at 4DOS, now freeware?

There was some discussion a while back in a.c.freeware on file
description / comment adders. You could try groups.google.com for this.

ANNOTSX

Shell extension

Right click on a file or folder, select Properties, a new page titled
'annotation' is displayed. Now enter any comments and annotations you
want to associate with the selected file. Modifications of the
annotations are saved automatically when you close Properties.

Aaah, but I need to see the comments in a column. As far as I know, only
Explorer Notes 2.0 adds a column to Explorers other columns.

AC Browser Plus gives a comments column, but it's clumsy inasmuch as you
have to open the program and then go through all the directories until you
get to your folder.

I'll probably end up getting Explorer Notes 2.0, from PC Mag. It's pretty
cheap, about 5 dollars.

Ha! Got Explorer Notes 2.0 and it's not what I want!

It does *not* add another column to Explorers other columns!

Then WTF didn't you say so in the first place? You asked for a program
to add comments, I and others gave you programs.

Well, I was thinking all file management programs would show a screen like
say Explorer, and I was asking for a program that would show a comments
column as well.

I should have chosen my words more carefully.

The program referenced above is *not* Explorer Notes. It is something
called Easy Explorer 2.0, and is designed just to put an icon in the
systems tray to allow you to start Explorer. It may have other
features, but I didn't bother to install it since it wasn't Explorer
Notes. (Also, it is not a PC Mag utility.)

Sorry, I wasn't sure if it was the right prog or not. Explorer Notes
2.0 is pretty hard to find without paying at PCMag.

Here you can find the *real* Explorer Notes 2.0, the PCMag utility:

http://sonofspy3.spymac.com/Text.html
http://www.anycities.com/user1/sonofspy/Text.html

[It's about 2/3's down the page].

Thanks.

But and I went and bought it from PC Mag. :c(

And unfortunately, unlike Explorer Notes 1.0, it does not add a comments
column alongside the other Explorer columns.

Still, it might prove useful.

Oh, BTW, you cannot add a note to internet shortcuts.

Freeware purists would never consider using a shareware
nagware program ,of course, :-) but Total Commander has
file comments, and it works for internet shortcuts too.

These comments are automatically copied and moved with the file.

Hover the cursor over a file and the file comment
is shown as a tool tip field.

You can choose to store file comments in a files.bbs file
or a descript.ion file which are both old standard systems
for storing file comments.

TC gives you file comments in a column in the file
manager view, 29 possible custom views, use one of them
for this purpose or add such a column to the regular view.
Then WTF didn't you say so in the first place? You asked for a program
