Using Windows XP Home edition, somehow the default/standard file list
box seems to be sorting by date, where it used to sort by file name
alphabetically. Is there some mouse movement that I have hit on that
would do this that I can use to easily undo it? I know I can
right-click and choose my method, but since I virtually always want to
sort by name, I'd prefer that it just do that all the time. I have had
this problem for about three weeks now, and I notice that file list
boxes in most applications are affected. Office programs have more
intricate file list boxes and these still sort alphabetically?

Anyone know the way back here?

Since the dialog boxes are also effected by this, open Windows Explorer
with the focus on the root of the drive. Example: focus on C:
Sort by name. Then use File> Close to close Explorer.

This is an old Win98 article but it has worked in many cases to resolve the
problem in XP as well. It basically describes the steps that I've outlined
above:

Items in "Open" and "Save As" Dialog Boxes Sorted Incorrectly
