Windows XP Home Ed.
$MFT is fragmented
Ran both Norton speed disk and Windows defrag. program.

Situation: The $MFT file was fragmented into 3 pieces when
I had an older machine. I just built a completely new one,
all new parts, and the same file is fragemented in 3 pieces.
Symantec stated to me that their program can not
defragment that file.

Is that file supposed to be fragmented?
If not, is it something that should be defragmented?
If so, how?

Thanx

Yes that file is usually fragmented. I think the minimum you can ever get it
to is 2 pieces. However, don't lose sleep over it ;-)

You need to run a offline defrag. I do not know if Norton SpeedDisk does
this. I used SpeedDisk for many years but when went to XP I found a better
defrag program, PerfectDisk from Raxco.

Try it you will like it.

PerfectDisk will defrag the MFT during an "off line" (during reboot) defrag.
