I noticed your reference to opening the file in wordpad

A somewhat common problem occurs when people open Excel files in Word. If the file is saved in Word, a message comes up stating that the file will be saved in word format. The only problem is that Word doesn't change the extension. So you have now saved a word document with an xls extension, and effectively erased your excel document

If the sheet isn't too complicated you might be able to open it in Word, Edit>Select_All, and paste into a blank Excel sheet

Otherwise, I hope you have a backup

Good Luck
