Is this feature not available in XP Home? The options are
in the alternate menu list, but they are inactive (greyed
out). I can only come to the conclusion that it is not
availble for XP Home, or I am missing the obvious.

*let it be the obvious*

Well, it is the Obvious, in a way - because you said it already..

This article describes how to use the Windows XP Encrypting File System
(EFS) feature to store files in an encrypted format on your hard disk.

Encryption is the process of converting data into a format that cannot be
read by others. You can use EFS to automatically encrypt your data when it
is stored on the hard disk.

*** The EFS feature is not included in Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.

=) Sorry.

Ron,

It is that obvious. File and folder encryption is a function of Windows XP
Professional.
Due to the shared code between the two products you see the option but it is
greyed out on Home Edition.

Correct, EFS is available only with WinXP Pro.

No Problem. Sorry (in this case) the answer is the one you thought it was.
