Can anyone suggest how to get explorer to show the actual extension for
files. For example I have Nero installed so all my audio files just say
(under type) Nero - I cant find anywhere (except going to a dos window) to
find out whether it is a mp3, wav or whatever.

In Explorer, go to Tools-Folder Options-View and the eleventh one down
(approx) "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck it.

Hi Ron

With Windows Explorer open, go to Tools>Folder Options>View and uncheck
'Hide extensions for known file types'.

Hi Ron,

Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
In the View tab, clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.

Thank you for the very speedy reply - I should have found this one myself!

It's not the first place you would think of looking is it?
Why that option wasn't part of the "View" icon I don't know!

Control Pane - Folder Options - View. Uncheck 'Hide extensions for
registered file types' and click Apply

More importantly why Microsoft still sets a default to hide file extensions,
no one knows. I'm not usually a harsh MS critic but this practice is mind
boggling in it's sheer stupidity. It's been rightfully cited as a senseless
security danger everywhere, and is endlessly confusing to end-users with
limited proficiency. That setting has to be changed first thing for every
support purpose. What are they thinking??!
