Hello all,

I have a real bad problem. Every time I start the File Explorer on my
XP Professional, it immediately crashes. I cannot explorer any files
anymore. This means the whole system is not usable anymore :-(

Does anyone have a hint for me how to repair this?

Thanks,

Bernd

Crashes is a generic term and makes it harder to offer advice. When it
halts - do you get a Blue Screen or any type of status box ? Register
codes can help lead you to the underlying cause.
Is this a new condition - or one you've experienced for some time ? It
could be Context handler problems (3rd-Party Application Hooks) or
something as simple as memory issues.
As a general rule - the most recent change (Hardware/Software) can
sometimes be the cause of an unstable system. If your PC uses System
Restore you may want to take it's state back a week or so and see if
the issue is resolved.
Also, check the System & Application Event logs. I work on a number
of computers that are "Hobbled" by persistent errors that need resolving.
Event Viewer is accessible by:
Click Start, Run (Type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
Expand each of the 3 categories and check the Right Pane for red icons
that denote error(s).

Hi R.McCarthy,

thanks for your awnser.

Crash mean that I get a MessageBox "application has a problem and must
be terminated" (sorry, I have the german version and don't know the
exact english translation). It also is asking me, if I want to send the
problem report to Microsoft.

The crash only occurs when I navigate to "My Computer".

The Problem occurs since about 2 weeks. I have installed a lot of
programs. It could really be possible that the problem is caused of an
recently installed programm. But it I cannot restore the system to an
earlier point of time.

The EventViewer gave me a hint: On every crash I get an entry
"Application Error"! It says: Error in Module "mpr.dll", Version
5.1.2600.2180, Adress 0x00002b56.

Googling for "mpr.dll" gets me this from one of the resulting links:

"The mpr.dll library contains software components to allow connection to
multiple network protocols simultaneously e.g. connection to a windows
and novell network at the same time. This process will manage the
communication between the differing protocols."

So perhaps you've installed something network-related that is failing.
Another reason for your problem can be if something you installed
(third-party) has put an extension into the context menu (right-click).
You can troubleshoot that by using the free ShellExView utility.
