file explorer after reinstall no longer shows file size at bottom

More than once I've reinstalled XP and have lost the little reference at that bottom of the window of file size.
Actually I think it was directory file size total with drive size and drive space left. Does anyone know how I can get file explorer to work as it did before. Everything else on the system seems fine.

Are you talking about view -> Status Bar?

You'll also need to apply this setting to all windows.
