File Explore windows disapperas

Win2k. Since I cleaned up some cache file from inactive user
accounts, something strange has started to happen.

When I do a file explore, and try to cut and paste a large file, for
example, the disk starts to trash about, and then the explore window
simply disappears. It appears that some kind of timeout is in play,
and if the explore window is hanging for too long, it just times it
out.

Help. If you don’t know what is causing it, is there a way to restore
’explore’ short of reinstalling the OS.

Your help is GREATLY appreciated.

What happens if you logon as a new user? (create a new account in 'Users and
Passwords').
