file disappeared

My husband was working on a word document sent to him in Outlook. He filled in answers to some questions. He hit "file" "save as" and put it on the desktop. then he closed it. When he reopened later after reboot, the document with questions is still there but the answers he supplied are gone. Have searched explorer and unable to find the document with the answers. Any sugesstions?

What happens if he opens the file attachment from Outlook again?

Also, what version of Word and Outlook are you using?
