my computer crashed a few days ago and I got it up enough to run file and
transfer wizard and put the file on another hard drive. I formatted and
reinstalled win xp the did all the upgrades then I tried to restore setting
and files using the wizard. it told me that I was using a newer version of
the wizard and to use my original install cd and choose the correct option.
I did and told it where to find the file and it responded by saying it could
not find the file at the specified location. that is the same location that
the fresh updated install told me to use and older version. how can I get
the wizard restore my setting and files when neither op system wants to
handle the file?

Thanks

You old CD version is XP and the OS your backing up has SP2 installed?
You need to slipstream XP to SP2
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp
and SP2 http://tinyurl.com/5bobl

Your trying to install an SP2 file that the XP CD doesn't have.

I had sp2 installed when I did the backup and when I tried to restore and
both were up to date. why does this not work?

Thanks

But is your original CD updated to SP2 - if so...

Do you know the name of the file you can download it, if not can you
get to a run command?

Start | Run <type in> eventvwr.msc <enter>
In the error messages your file should be listed

Depending upon the type of file (a DLL), it might need to be
registered
Start | Run <type in> regsvr32 {Your file name} <enter>
