Nick

Hi,

I have two laptops, one running XP Home SP1 and the other, XP Pro SP2.
Both are connected to the Internet via a wireless router. Both can
access the Internet and ping each other, and are in the same workgroup.
However, neither can see the other in My Network Places. The XP
firewall is disabled on both. What could be the problem?

Many thanks,
-Nick

Try:

1. Make sure File and Printer Sharing and NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on
both machines.

2. Share a folder on each machine.

3. On the XP Home machine, click Start/Run net stop browser ENTER.

4. On the XP Pro machine, click Start/Run net stop browser ENTER - then
Start/Run net start browser ENTER.

5. On the XP Home machine, click Start/Run net start browser ENTER - wait
12 minutes and try My Network Places.

Thanks Doug,

Part of the problem was #2 (there were no shares configured). Now,
however, the two computers still can't see each other in My Network
Places but I can access them and their shares by typing their IP
addresses in the address bar. If I type the name instead of the IP
address (e.g., \\Computer1), the computer "can't be found", so there
appears to be a name resolution problem. I had a similar problem in
the past because the Node Type was configured as Peer-to-Peer instead
of Broadcast or Hybrid (in the registry). Now, however, both computers
involved are configured as Hybrid nodes, and yet it still doesn't
work... I don't know what else to try, any more suggestions?

Many thanks,
Nick
