Field size decrease

I have downloaded a table from a Lotus Notes system. The table is fine in
most regards except that all fields are text of field size 255.
I wanted to decrease these to a realistic number (e.g. 25) as I thought this
would somehow reduce the file size of the database which as a table alone
has currently 70,000 plus records.

Problem: get an error when I change any of them "MS Access cannot change the
data type. There isn't enough disk space or memory"

Any ideas as to why I cannot reduce the field size?

Well, since Access does NOT store trailing blanks, it's not actually
going to save you much of anything.

Well, that's true when you save the data via a form. It is the Access form
processing (not Jet) that strips the trailing blanks. But I'm not sure you
could count on that with other actions, like, importing data directly (not
via a form)?
